What Students Should Expect

I teach singing technique and performance practice for all styles of music, spanning the Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) and Classical genres. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that each and every singer possesses a unique and valuable instrument. My job is to help students find their natural voice, to understand the function of their body as their instrument, and sing with freedom, musicality, and expression.  I always begin work with the underlying goal of producing healthy, efficient singing. Fundamental technique includes correct posture/alignment, breathing, resonance, placement, and diction. Professional and advanced students will explore nuanced vocal techniques to support their musical and performance goals. Beginning students will be asked to sing from the Classical repertoire as well as their chosen repertoire in order to better develop a technically solid vocal instrument. Emphasis is also placed on musicianship, performance skills, and the psychology of performing.  Students are strongly encouraged to seek live performance opportunities. I welcome regular and open communication with students and guardians via email, phone, or in person.

What I Expect From Weekly Students

  • Outside, daily practice on exercises and music (documented in journal)

  • Attendance and punctuality for all scheduled lessons/coachings

  • Recording of weekly lessons to utilize in practice sessions

  • Healthy vocal lifestyle (no smoking, excessive drugs or alcohol, yelling, etc.)

  • Outside listening, performance attendance, and public performance (yours!)

  • Open and consistent communication, to ensure the most student progress
